Types of poker
Texas Hold’em is the most popular type of poker.
There are other poker games with fancy names – like Omaha, Razz, and Stud – but if you’re new to poker Texas Hold’em is the one to learn.
Texas Hold’em comes in three flavours:
- No-Limit Texas Hold’em
- Pot-Limit Texas Hold’em
- Fixed-Limit Texas Hold’em.
They’re all very similar, with slightly different restrictions on the amounts that players can bet. Let’s look at them in more detail.
No-Limit Texas Hold’em
In No-Limit Texas Hold’em, the amount you can raise is unlimited. At any time you can push all your chips into the pot.
Pros
Play No-Limit Hold’em if you prefer a faster game with the potential for large profits.
Fixed Limit Texas Hold’em
The amount you can bet or raise is fixed in Limit Hold’em. So if you’re playing on a table with $2/$4 stakes, you can only bet $2 in the first two betting rounds, and $4 in the last two betting rounds.
Pros
Play Limit Hold’em if you’re just learning poker, or if you don’t want to risk losing much money. Limit Hold’em is a more mathematical game, so it’s good if you don’t enjoy the bluffing and psychological aspects of poker.
Pot-Limit Texas Hold’em
The amount you can bet or raise is capped in Pot-Limit Hold’em. Players can bet whatever is currently in the pot when the action reaches them.
Pros
Play Pot-Limit Hold’em if you want more freedom in your betting than Limit Hold’em allows, but you don’t want the wild action involved in No-Limit Hold’em.
Those are the three main types of Texas Hold’em you’ll encounter at PartyPoker.com.
